The Complete Dark Castle Saga is Now on Steam

The titles aren't remakes or reinterpretations but rather faithful replicas.

Ludit announced that Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle are now available on Steam. This means that the complete existing Dark Castle saga is on the platform for the first time.

Dark Castle was first released for the Macintosh in 1986 with Beyond Dark Castle coming out a year later in 1987. These two became defining titles of early personal-computer gaming. These recent versions though aren't remakes or reinterpretations but rather faithful replicas. That's because the studio shared in a statement that it was able to preserve the unique 1-bit artwork of the original games along with the animation, audio, timing, challenge, and darkly comic personality.

Dark Castle

Even before precision platforming had a name, Dark Castle was already testing players with deadly timing, comic hazards, and that unforgettable black-and-white style. This classic action game helped define what personal computer games could feel like and that is, cinematic, strange, funny, and brutally memorable.

The game has players take on the role of Duncan as he storms the Black Knight’s castle. He's armed with rocks, quick reflexes, and has very little room for error. Each chamber is a compact gauntlet of guards, rats, bats, ropes, ledges, traps, and perfectly mistimed disaster.

This re-release brings back one of the great cult classics of the original Macintosh era for retro fans, collectors, and players who love hard-earned victories. Dark Castle is tough, weird, funny, and still ready to punish the bold.

Beyond Dark Castle

Beyond Dark Castle sees the Black Knight survive and now Duncan has to take on quests that are bigger, stranger, and more dangerous. This sequel expands the original cult classic into a deeper action-adventure as it features new rooms, new hazards, new tools, and a far more ambitious castle to conquer.

The game has players collect the magic orbs, master the fireball and shield, and push through towers, catacombs, swamps, breweries, labyrinths, and the Black Knight’s final defenses. The challenge is still precise and unforgiving though the adventure is broader, richer, and even more satisfying to master.

For retro collectors, precision-platforming fans, and players who appreciate games from the era before hand-holding, Beyond Dark Castle delivers a hard-earned classic sequel. It is funny, punishing, inventive, and built for players who enjoy the climb.

Both Dark Castle and Beyond Dark Castle are available on Steam for $9.99.
