The game offers a different kind of roguelite experience.
The roguelite 2D platformer Respark is now available on Steam. The game puts eccentric weapons known as Hanabi, or fireworks, in the hands of the players. It takes the genre in a way that hasn't been seen before.
Respark follow two squirrel pyrotechnicians, Hanaby and Fusey, as they go on what can be described is an explosive adventure. The game makes use of the modern roguelite framework and as a result ensures that each run feels fresh. In addition, to make sure that the challenge remains to be dynamic, the procedurally generated terrain, enemies, and items, change for each run. Ultimately, how players progress is entirely up to them.
Permadeath Feature
One of the interesting features of Respark is the essence of permadeath. While it is called as "permadeath," the characters actually don't really die. What happes is that when health hits zero, all stats are reset and the character is sent back to the base. Basically, the progress resets.
Unique Training System
Another feature to keep an eye out for is the Bow-Down Training System. For those who don't manage to defeat a boss, all they need to do is have their character bow down literally. Once they do this, they get to unlock a practice session against that boss. One different with the main game is that in the practice session, there's unlimited health.
The thing to remember is that this doesn't work as a continue. Once players are done practicing, they immediately return to base. However, that combat experience is already there. This means that failures become training, and then training becomes progress.
Not Too Dark
It goes without saying that when it comes to roguelites, the leaning is towards a darker atmospheres especially with permadeath and punishing mechanics. Respark is able to counter this with the combination of a lighthearted story, bright visuals, and a full soundtrack by pop composer AAAA. This synergy allow for a play experience that feels uniquely upbeat, even within the roguelite genre.
Free Demo
A free demo of Respark is available on Steam. It gives them access to three of the eight worlds. However, the story progression, suspend/resume, and permanent stat saves won't be available for this version.
