Co-publisher 8-Bit Legit announced that a free playable demo for Echoes of the Unread is now available on Steam. It's being developed by Clever Cat Games and Mega Cat Studios.
The free demo invites players to enter the enchanted library alongside Rhapsody as she awakens to a world where books have burst into life. In addition, her singing voice seems to have the power to shape everything around her. The demo features a portion of the library itself along with the first full zone of the game known as the Wild West. In this area, Rhapsody needs to explore a sandswept frontier town, befriend its colorful inhabitants, and collect lost pages that hold the key to finding her way back home.
In a statement, creator of Echoes of the Unread and founder of Clever Cat Games Matt Tuttle shared that the demo version has features that he wanted to have in the NES version but couldn't "due to console limitations." The added features include an inventory that helps players track their progress and a controller vibration to increase the immersion. The dialogue is now even made easier to read. The demo, according to Tuttle, pretty much feels like it is a "remastered version."
Echoes of the Unread puts players in the role of a young girl Rhapsody. While studying in the library she falls asleep and later awakens to a strange world. It's a world where the books have come to life and her voice has the power to shape the world around her with song.
In order to find her way back home, she needs to step into the pages of these tales and explore the various imaginative realms where they’ll befriend a cowboy, serenade a mermaid, outsmart a mischievous ghost, and sing mystical melodies. All of these to escape the clutches of the wicked magician Odele, who hopes to keep her trapped in the library forever.
Echoes of the Unread was released last year for the NES after a successful Kickstarter campaign. The game is planned to be released on Steam later this year. Wishlist Echoes of the Unread now.
